About Mogaveera Sangha

Five Decades of Unity, Service, and Community Progress

About Us

Our Story

The Mogaveera community, known for its courage, resilience, and unity, has long upheld a simple and dignified way of life. Despite facing economic and educational challenges, the community has thrived through strong values of organization, cooperation, coexistence, and individual freedom. Traditionally rooted along the coastal regions, the primary livelihood of the Mogaveeras has been fishing and fish trade.

Over time, in search of better opportunities, members of the community began migrating to distant cities. This movement gained momentum after the reorganization of states in 1956, when the undivided South Canara district became part of Karnataka, leading to a steady migration of Mogaveeras to Bengaluru.

As the community gradually established itself in the city, the need for a unified platform to connect, support, and represent its members became evident. With this vision, eminent leaders of the community came together, and in 1973, the foundation for the Mogaveera Sangha, Bengaluru, was laid. The Sangha was formally registered on 12 March 1975 under the Karnataka Societies Act, with the late Sri H. Lakshman Salian, a retired District Judge, serving as its first President. Over the past five decades, twelve distinguished leaders have guided the Sangha with dedication and vision.

To strengthen bonds among members spread across the city, the first gathering was organized in 1977 at Lalbagh's Glass House. Since then, annual gatherings have been held across Bengaluru, featuring sports events, cultural programs, health camps, and talent recognition ceremonies. The Sangha has consistently honored individuals who have excelled in social, professional, and cultural fields.

With the support of generous donors, the Talent Award Program was initiated in 1979 to recognize meritorious students. Over the years, this initiative has encouraged academic excellence across the community.

The Silver Jubilee of the Sangha was celebrated in 1998 with great grandeur at Guru Nanak Bhavan, in the divine presence and blessings of Sri Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt. In 2001, a matrimonial registration initiative was introduced to assist unmarried youth in finding suitable life partners.

To engage a larger section of the community, especially the youth, Mogaveera Sevadal units were established from 2014–15. Today, 18 active units work tirelessly, significantly expanding the Sangha's reach and doubling its membership.

A landmark Mogaveera Convention was organized in 2015 at Palace Grounds under the guidance of Nadoja G. Shankar, inaugurated by the then Hon'ble Chief Minister Sri Siddaramaiah. Since 2016, the prestigious Madhava Mangalashree Award has been instituted to honor achievers in various fields.

The Sangha has also organized large-scale blood donation drives, contributing significantly to institutions such as the Red Cross, Manipal Hospital, and Kidwai Hospital. During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Sangha stood firmly with the community, providing essential supplies, extending support to affected families, and even assisting in final rites with compassion and courage. The establishment of the Women's Wing in 2020 further strengthened participation and leadership among Mogaveera women.

Currently, the construction of a Community Hall and Medical Assistance Centre is underway on a civic amenity site allotted by BDA at LIC Colony, Jeevanbheemanagar. With the generous support of Nadoja G. Shankar and contributions from well-wishers, the Sangha continues its efforts to complete this landmark project.

Marking its Golden Jubilee, the Sangha organized a series of events under "Suvarna Patha," culminating in a grand convention held on 5 January 2025 at White Petals, Palace Grounds, inaugurated by the Hon'ble Chief Minister Sri Siddaramaiah.

With an unwavering commitment to its founding ideals, the Mogaveera Sangha continues its journey of service and unity. It aspires to complete the community hall at the earliest and dedicate it to the welfare and progress of the community.
